At the Arrivaderci Pizza Night on 26 May I
made two big mistakes. First, I sat opposite Brad D and second, I suggested that the Club
Croc Committee organize a Duathlon Series for the winter months as a lead up to the “Worlds”
in September. Little did I know that the “D” in Brad D stands for “Delegator”, not
“Dalrymple.” Before I could grab another piece of pizza I was the organizer for the Nundah
Duathlon Series!
The first race on 28 June was attended by
twenty-two athletes with categories for under and over thirty-five. Competitors came from as
far as Kilcoy, Noosa and Sunshine Coast. Our own Club Croc member, Daniel Hyde was the
overall winner. He scorched around the run and bike track and his slick transitions were pure
poetry in motion. Do we have a star in the making here? Visitors, Dmitri Simon from Noosa and
Ben Shaw from Frenchville filled the next two podium places. Brad D and Doddy fought out a
sprint finish with Brad D winning with a desperate lunge for the line. Natalie Dellow from
Sunshine Coast took out the honours in the female race, just ahead of our own Jodie
Spottiswood. Anna Davis was third overall and winner of Female Over 35yrs.
Race two on Sunday, 26 July saw an
increased field of fifty- three athletes compete in both Sprint and Long Distance format
races. Dan Hyde unfortunately was not a starter due to injury.
Doddy looked in awesome form as he showed
his younger rivals a clean pair of heels to take out the overall and AG winner. Brad D
cleaned up in the Under 35 yrs male. Minor placings in the male races were filled by BTS and
Spike competitors. Among the girls our own Jacqui Kelly looked strong as she took out first
placed female and U 35 AG winner. Anna showed her consistency by again winning the Female
Over 35 yrs. Minor placings were again taken out by members of other clubs.
The Sprint Race provided the most
excitement of the day as Mark Browne and Linda Marsh went head to head for overall honours. A
speedy final bike dismount saw both competitors dash into transition area. An unbelievably
fast transition by Brownie got him a few seconds advantage over Linda and he won the short
sprint by mere metres. A close inspection of Brownie’s feet however, revealed that he had run
in his socks!! What some men will do to save the male ego. Brownie will henceforth be forever
known as “Running Bare.”
The day was finished off with a Kids Race.
Nobody cared about the results because they were all winners and had a great time. Phoebe
Marsh was second and proudly displayed her trophy and ladybug beetle watch
prize.
Keep the date of Sunday, 30 August free for
the final race in the series. We know this clashes with the Bridge to Bris Run but it was the
only date we could get the track.
Have fun,
Peter Mc
